PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Humberhead Peatlands National Nature Reserve is internationally noted for being the largest lowland raised bog wilderness in Britain and an important site for its rare flora and fauna. To celebrate this Kier’s has been comissioned by Natural England to construct a research and community centre.  The new centre will include an office, meeting space, classroom, sleeping accommodation and workshop.

FACTS AND INFORMATION

Thorne and Hatfield Moors form the largest area of lowland raised peat bog in the United Kingdom.
To protect the area from visitor centre from flooding a protective bund was constructed around the visitor centre

OUR WORK

Site Preparation

Cut and fill exercises were undertaken, to create a level site. Bulk fill was then undertaken to create a piling matt to facilitate the installation of driven piles. Several bunds were also constructed to create new nesting habitats for wildlife.

Foundations

Piles were cropped and bent into postion. New RC pads and ringbeams were excavated and installed to form the foundation. Peckerfill was utilized on this project to minimize wastage and ensure minimal impact to the natural environment by eliminating run off of concrete.

Damp Proof Membrane

Due to the site conditions, a gas membrane was required to prevent and vent ground gasses from entering the underside of the modular units. Vent pipework was cast into the foundations and intricate lapping details between modular and traditional forms of construction were undertaken to maintain a continuous detail.

Drainage

Foul, storm and land drainage was installed on site. Pop ups bought up to finished floor level and installed through sleeves in the strip footing. Retention, attenuation and seperator tanks were installed to manage the storm water which subsequently discharged into a freshwater lake. A large septic tank was installed in challenging ground conditions, below the water table.

External Works

A large carparking area was formed for new visitors and staff using a geo-cellular membrane. Paved areas were created, adjacent to the lake so outdoor learning could take place.

Project Testomonial

NNC worked alongside Kiers to deliver this new HQ and teaching facility for Natural England in a live nature reserve. The project was not without its challenges. Nesting seasons created programme constraints and the main bridge entrance to the project was deemed unsafe to use part way through the build. Through all this NNC continued to go above and beyond to ensure programme, budget and quality consideraions were met at all stages. NNC were a key component of this projects successful delivery.

  • NNC undertook the groundworks package at the Melton Mowbray Cattle Market. Works ranged from deep drainage diversions & RC foundations to precisely setting out of bolt boxes & pennage sleeves to the underside of the groundfloor slab. All works were planned and executed on programme given due consideration to the “live” project environement we were working on. I would not hesitate to use NNC again.

  • NNC’s were approached directly due to the high profile nature of this project to deliver the groundworks package. From our experience on several previous schemes we knew we could rely on them to deliver this flagship project and work with us to ensure its success. NNC’s ability to perform and function as a key project partner meant that we were able to deliver a scheme which exceeded our clients expectations.
